School Pick-up and Drop-off Safety Assessment Template

For Council officers and Traffic consultants

Use this template to assess a school pick-up or drop-off safety concern at the times it is actually reported. It records movements by children and carers, vehicles, buses and deliveries alongside the road environment, school operations and evidence gaps. The form supports a clear next assessment step; it does not determine school-zone times, approve a crossing or promise a physical treatment. Check the responsible authority's current requirements before acting.

When to use this template

Use it for concerns about congestion, crossing behaviour, vehicle arrivals, parking, visibility, conflict points or access near a school. Do not use it as a school travel plan, a school-zone application, a traffic-control design or a substitute for site-specific professional advice.

Fictional worked example

Form fieldExample entry
LocationFictional Wattle Primary, gate on Cedar Street
ConcernCars queue beside the gate between 3:05 and 3:25 pm; families report children crossing between parked vehicles.
Inputs completedSchool finish time, bus-stop location, existing parking signs, prior request and one morning observation.

Assessment questionHow do vehicle queues and pedestrian movements interact outside the gate during the reported collection period?
Next actionAgree an observation period with the school, add the evidence to the location record and seek the relevant authority advice if changes are proposed.

Limits and approvals

School operations, road authority responsibilities and sign or parking controls vary by jurisdiction and location. Keep children, carers, staff and nearby residents in view, but do not promise a zone change, supervisor, crossing or device before the required assessment, consultation and approvals. Where your organisation uses XVision Command, keep the request and evidence against the exact school-gate location in line with local records practice.
